Mr. Rinks Reflection
Mr. Rinks was the guest speaker. He was a teacher in California for 18 years and saw over 2,000 students. He also was the VP at a Tech company. Mr. Rinks is well certified to be giving us (students) wisdom.
Mr. Rinks talked about the comparison of diamonds to humans. He went through how each diamond has its own unique cuts called “facets”. The reflection of light through and out the diamond depends on the facets. He told us to write down some of our “facets” , what makes us, us. For example, i’m a son, student, brother, and child of God. He also talked about how diamonds have flaws. Even the most beautiful stone can have flaws. He compared this to movie stars and celebrities. He pointed out their flaws then stated that these things didn’t hold them back to becoming starts and famous people. Finally, he talked about how cleaning diamonds is very important to keep them shiny.
From this presentation I learned that flaws can be a good thing . That our choices are important and they matter. Our flaws give us uniqueness and beauty. We are shaped everyday by the choices and people we surround ourselves with. We also need to keep ourselves clean and we can do that through the lord. God can clean us and fix our flaws.
Mrs. Schneider Reflection
Mrs. Schneider attended DU law school, got a political science degree, and is a licensed realtor for REMAX.
Mrs. Schneider talked about our plan for when we get older. She talked about finding something we are passionate about. She brought up that God is in control and that we should look to him for help. Mrs. Schneider gave us some tips on how to start a job and stay focused. She recommended that we use a physical planner to write down things that we need to get done. This will help with procrastinating and getting tasks done. She said we should be open minded and teachable. She told us to ask questions and find a drive and desire to succeed. All in all, she pointed it back to God. She told us to stay faithful, be grateful, and give praise to God.
From Mrs. Schneider's presentation I got exposed to multiple ways on how to stay motivated. I learned that using a planner is very beneficial. Using a planner helps with the mind connection and remembering what you need to get done. She told us that its "ok" to not know what we want to do in future. Our calling will come through God. We need to praise God and be grateful for him and he will show his plans. Finally I learned that it is good to ask questions and for help when I need it. I need to be teachable and more open to Gods plan.
Mr. Robinson Reflection
Mr. Robinson was an intern for a investment firm in high school. He got an accounting degree in college. He then got a job at Morgan Stanley in the financial services department as a financial advisor.
Mr. Robinson talked about a variety of financial services and how the business world works. He talked about how inflation works and the impact it has on our economy. When there is more money than goods and services circulating in our economy inflation comes about. The cost for those goods and services goes up to balance out for the excess of money. He talked about what it means to be a financial advisor and the requirements for the job. There are two main requirements, being good with people and having a high attention to detail. He then went into detail about investments. He talked about cash investments, bond, equities, and the alternatives. He talked about how cash is the most reliable. He talked about how bonds are just "IOU". He went into even more depth on equities. He gave us the two most important thing to know before investing. The amount of risk your willing to take and how much time you have. He then finally touched on the risk and reward side of investments. He said to know how much your willing to risk and if it is worth the reward.
From Mr. Robinson's presentation I was able to put my amateur level of business knowledge to the test. I learned new terms such as volatility which is the amount of fluctuation a stock has. I learned how inflation can be fixed by the federal government. I also learned the depth of the federal government and how they are able to put money in and out of our economy. I had no knowledge of bonds before his presentation. Now I know that they are pretty much an IOU. I learned that cash is the most stable investment of all the ones he talked about. The topic that stuck out to me the most was risk and reward. Mr. Robinson gave two example of a business deal one with a good amount of risk in return for little reward the other with a big amount of risk and little reward. The reward should be worth the risk. All in all, Mr. Robinson's presentation was very helpful to mean and opened up my perspective of the business world. He also gave me many life long tips that will come in handy in the near future.
Mrs. Shepard Reflection
Mrs. Shepard got her juris doctrine at DU and a Bachelor of science at CSU. She went to Cherry Creek High School. She applied to law school twice and got rejected twice. She finally got accepted and now runs a family law firm since 2012.
Mrs. Shepard fist talked about her tribulations with law school. She talked about how being persistent pays off. She also talked about her family struggles with having a kid right at the start of law school. She then went into depth about law. She talked about some of her cases and how she balanced work life with having a kid. She talked about the importance of self healing and taking time for yourself among work life. She talked about the different types of cases she deals with. She mainly takes part in family law meaning she deals with divorce and child support. For the divorce side of things she deals with an equal amount of men and women. She said she almost feels like a therapist to her clients. She talked about the importance of public speaking and people skills. She ended with relating her line of work back to God.
From Mrs. Shepard's presentation I got opened up to the lawyer line of work. I've never really been interested in law but she made it pretty interesting. I also learned that persistence is key. If you really want to do something in life you can't give up on it. I also learned from Mrs. Shepard the details on divorce. I learned that sometimes the couple still lives together through the divorce. I also learned that the children don't really have a say unless they are deemed mature enough to decide which parent they want to spend more time with. One very important part that stuck out to me is how she said she saw God's light shine through the dark. She said her clients were going through some of the hardest times of their lives and they still got up and went to work and took care of their kids. This was humbling and inspiring. It showed my that God is still present even in the darkest times in our lives. He is always there for us no matter what.
Mr. Wong Reflection
Mr. Wong attended Colorado University. He has 25 years of experience with software development, architecture, and leadership. He is a first generation American and joined Slalom in 2018. He is now a head consultant at Slalom.
Mr. Wong started his speech with talking about setting a main purpose in life to focus on. He then talked about consulting and what he does for his job. As a consultant he is brought problems and he has to think of the cause of the problem solutions for said problem. Mr. Wong then went into an example with a problem at Costco. We had to identify why the ales cause a smaller amount queue lines than there were registers. This caused confusion on where the people waiting in the middle line should go. There are three ways to look at the problem; People, Technology, or process. I personally thought it was a combination of all three but mainly process. To solve this problem I said to make a specified queue line for each register instead of leaving it up to the customers to solve. Mr. Wong concluded his presentation with things to think about when brought up a specific problem. He walked us through a example and gave us pointers to think about everything and anything at all.
From Mr. Wong's presentation I broadened my perspective on future jobs. I personally never took into account consulting as a profession and his speech opened my eyes to consulting. Having to think about why a problem is occurring and identifying the source is very difficult. The whole class thought we answered the example question perfectly but Mr. Wong still had things to add after. Consulting takes a creative thinker. His speech really put what we have learned about creativity into motion. Having to work the example problem with Costco was a great eye opener and makes me want to think about pursuing it. Lastly, Mr. Wong brought up the idea of having a set purpose and related it back to God. We should pursue our own purpose but also trust in what God has in store for us.
Mrs. Hedberg Reflection
Mrs. Hedberg is a regional vice president of Primerica Financial Services. She is a Business owner since age of 23. She manages 4 offices in CO with 100 licensed agents.
Mrs. Hedberg talked about a variety of financial tips. She talked about retirement, taxes, and tips for being financially successful. Only 1% of working people from 25-65 are wealthy. This is a scary statistic that only 1 out of 100 people can retire comfortably. She then talked about different plans to become that 1%. Those include the traditional one which is; go to school, get a job, one source of income, no backup plans, keep up with the Joneses mentality. There is also a different way that includes; find ways to add value to people, have 3 minimum sources of income, start part time business, "create work", spend less than you. make. She also talked about budgeting and ways to save money. She talked about the importance of understanding taxes, insurance, and credit. Learning about it early is very beneficial. One of the main points was "Rich" vs "Wealthy". Wealthy people have money and time but rich people have money but no time.
From Mrs. Hedberg's presentation I have learned to value money differently. I learned about the different types of insurance and taxes. I learned how to properly manage money and different strategies for that. One of the biggest points that stuck with me was the difference between "Rich" and "Wealthy". Rich people have money but don't have time. They spend all their time making money and have none extra to spare. However, wealthy people have lots of money and time to spare. They can make money when they are away from work. All of this information I am going to take with me to prepare for the future. Money isnt the most important thing in life but can be a very useful tool when used with good intentions.
Mr. Gehrke Reflection
Mr. Gehrke is the Executive Director of Lutheran High School. He has been around Lutheran schools his whole life.
Mr. Gehrke talked about what it takes to run a school. He pointed out that private schools are just like any other business. He started his presentation off with giving the brief history of Lutheran Parker and Lutheran Denver. Mr. Gehrke then got down to business and talked about the budgeting plan for Lutheran. He handed out a sheet with the five year budget plan on it and talked about each section. He talked about our tuition and why it is at the current rate. He pointed out something that I didn't know. He stated that even though tuition this past year was $13,200 on average everyone paid about $8,000 because of financial aid. He then talked about who reports to him and how the Lutheran board works. He told us that he is the only one who actually reports to the board and the directors of each department report to him.
From Mr. Gehrke's presentation I learned what it takes to run a business. I learned how the private education system works and how they make money. I learned how our school makes money and how we are able to expand and grow, but only at a certain rate. I learned about the importance of a budgeting plan. This plan allows you to see where money is coming from and where all that money goes. All in all, Mr. Gehrke's presentation was very interesting and relevant to my life.
Mr. Oertli Reflection
Mr. Oertli attended CSU for college and then became a singer/song writer and now works ate Mission Hills Church and leads worship.
Mr. Oertli used his time to talk about music and how important stories are to the human brain. He started off his presentation by giving background information on how he got into music. He was a pastors kid and wasn't super into music until he got his first guitar. He got involved in a youth worship band and it took off from there. Mr. Oertli learned music through listening and not reading music. He then went into a little bit of the science behind music and how it works with our brain. He talked about what makes a great song and how a great song can really speak to people. Great songs have melody changes, vowels/rhyming, and have a great chorus. He talked about how God designed us remember things through stories. Stories allow us to paint a picture in our imagination. The neural activity in the brain increases by 5x when a story is being told. Through stories we as humans can relate emotionally to characters and build bonds with the made up characters that allow us to remember it better. He ended on how stories of failure are what people remember most.
From Mr. Oertli presentation I learned the importance of stories and songs that share a story. I learned how music works and how great songs are made. It is interesting to take what he presented and apply it to my favorite songs. It is also cool to see how most of the things I remember have an interesting story behind them. It was cool to see how the human brain is wired to remember visually and how we as humans make a connection with the characters. I can relate to connecting with characters from stories on an emotional level. It was also neat to learn how worship is run and the plaining that goes behind it. Everything they have up on the stage is intentional. For example they dim the lights so that people who are late to church can sneak in and not feel uncomfortable. In conclusion, Mr. Oertli's presentation was interesting and different from what i'm usually interested in.
Mr. Rinks was the guest speaker. He was a teacher in California for 18 years and saw over 2,000 students. He also was the VP at a Tech company. Mr. Rinks is well certified to be giving us (students) wisdom.
